What is The Covina Trivia Showdown?
The evening starts with a delicious dinner followed by our Trivia Showdown.Teams of 3 adults compete against each other answering trivia questions until only one team remains and is declared the winner. Questions are answered as a team, no individual answers. The winning team is given a trophy and all teams receive recognition just for participating.

Second Start Literacy Program |

Location: Covina Public Library, Literacy Area (upstairs)
Funding Sources: CLLS Grant (California Library Literacy Services) and the Friends of the Covina Public Library.
ADULT BASIC LITERACY SKILLS Funding Sources: California Library Literacy Services Grant, CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) and The Friends of the Covina Public Library.
The program serves native English speakers as well as students coming out of the ESL program who need to improve their skills before they move on to higher learning. The program is designed to help adults obtain the skills they need to reach their goals and is based on an Individual Learning Plan. The plan is developed by the adult and the Literacy Coordinator together. Adults are carefully matched with professionally trained volunteer tutors and receive instruction twice per week.
Core skills include: Reading-comprehension, fluency and vocabulary; writing; employability
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) Funding Sources: WIA Title II Grant (Workforce Investment Act)
The adult ESL program offers those with limited English proficiency an opportunity to acquire and learn the English language communication skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in a competency-based format. Instruction is designed to meet the diverse needs of students, ranging from the English of daily living to the language required for entry into vocational and academic programs as well as obtaining a job. The program starts at the beginning level for those with limited English and progresses to the final level before learners can be mainstreamed into all English instruction. All students are tutored in a one-on-one setting and get individualized instruction twice per week.
CHILDREN’S LITERACY Funding Sources: The Friends of the Covina Public Library The Children’s Literacy program provides students in first through eighth grades with the opportunity to increase their reading achievement by supplying the tools they need to develop reading skills and the guidance and support they need to grow as readers. Trained volunteer tutors provide reading support in phonics, sight word growth, comprehension and vocabulary enhancement. Students are tutored in a small group setting; one-on-one instruction is provided on a case-by-case basis.
